Maeve

Directed by Asmae

Synopsis:
Maeve, a young and kind woman, is hopelessly going on Tinder dates to find the right person. Her first date seems to be going well, but something appears missing to her. Afterwards, Maeve's roommate expresses her concerns; while understanding of her worries, this doesn't change Maeve's mind. The following evening, her next date appears more interesting (perhaps for the wrong reasons), but she does finally seem to be intrigued. Will she eventually find what she is looking for?

Director Statement:
“Maeve” aims to relate to social impact filmmaking by raising awareness to racial stereotypes existing in (Dutch) society, concerning women of South-East Asian descent. Women of such descent are often depicted superficially, submissive and hypersexual, which can lead to further consolidation of said stereotypes, fetishization, harassment and even (sexual) violence against them. The message this film is meant to convey is that though these racial stereotypes may appear less deeply rooted in colonialism, they are none the less harmful to the women concerning them and should not be accepted. By telling this story, hopefully social impact can be made in somewhat countering those simplified depictions.
