Rat King

Directed by Róisín Leavy-Sahin

Synopsis:
A young boy falls in love with a rat, setting off a frenzy in his small village as his mother and councilman capitalise on him. It builds up to disastrous consequence.

Director Statement:
This film explores the dangers of an isolated community through the lens of a heightened reality in a stereotypical Irish village. The village's worshipping of the boy and his rat has some parallels to things such as moving statue phenomenons, creating religious imagery. It spirals into chaos as the villagers abandon the boring lives in a rundown town for a more appealing frenzy and mob mentality.
