Light and Cold Conversation - Atlantic, Algorithmic and Visibility

Directed by Juntao Yang

Synopsis:

Using AIGC technology, the film resurrects the ghosts and spirits of the Afrofuturist imagination, the Drexciyans, who were African women thrown into the Atlantic during the slave trade and eventually mutated into a newborn underwater race along with their children, exposing how the contemporary AI industry has led to a global ecological crisis, racial injustice and class exploitation, under the shelter of techno-optimism and techno-utopian fantasies.

Director Statement:

The film addresses the important social issues we are facing today: the duplicity of AIGC technology and industry, the growing ecological crisis and the global distributional injustice. Through the radical collage of Internet-found moving images and generated images, the film attempts to activate the potential materiality of the medium and to link this materialist consciousness to the actions that will solve various social problems. As a field for the resurrection of ghosts from the past and the future, the film bridges alternative histories and discursive futures, allowing for the emergence of different voices in a polyphonic manner that awakens the public's critical imagination. In addition to this, the film prides itself on its 0 carbon footprint, and aims to make a case for a more responsible way of filmmaking.
