Anyway

Directed by Nicolas Maurin

Synopsis:
Leo has just turned 18, and must now leave the children's home where he grew up. With no housing solution, he experiences his first day living in the street.

Director Statement:
In France, one in four homeless person has grown up in a children's welfare home. These social structures are there to take care of children when their parents cannot, often because of addiction, abuses, or crimes. These children are sent from a structure to another, up to the point when they reach their majority. At this point, most of them have to leave the children's home, often on the very day of their 18th birthday. While some do have some housing solution to transition to, and in spite of the massive work performed by social workers, a significant part of these young adults end up in the street with no safe place to go to. This short film aims at showing this reality through the character of Leo, who, once out of the children's home, slowly makes the realisation of his own despair. It also intends to put these destinies in contrast with our own emotional distance, and the rapidity with which we go on with our lives. This distance, we build it from habits, and maybe also to protect ourselves. Protect ourselves from what we may feel, from the empathy that we could develop if we took the time to really consider the persons that reach for our help.
