Call me Sir

Directed by Roos van Gessel and Esma Ergül

Synopsis:
What do you think drag is? Men who dress like women? Who just dance and lip-sync? "Drama queens"? Or are they people who want to escape from reality? Activists who stand up for their rights and therefore the whole community. In our documentary, we do not only investigate what drag is but also how it feels to go drag for the first time. We let go of all our prejudices and assumptions. Are you able to do that?

Director Statement:
Drag goes against many norms that have been created within our society, just like any other art form. As a result, drag is often not understood and respected within our society. This misunderstanding makes drag so difficult for people to accept. Drags have to deal with a lot of hate and discrimination, and yes, also in Amsterdam. In our documentary we break through that ignorant part, and we take the viewer into our process to find out what a beautiful art form drag is.
